The Kano State Government has awarded contracts worth over N40.8 billion for the construction and rehabilitation of 17 township roads across the metropolitan area of the state. The projects, according to the government, will open up communities, reduce traffic congestion, and boost business activities for residents.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Information, Ibrahim Waiya, during a tour of completed and ongoing projects with the National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Alhassan Yahaya. Waiya said the contracts cut across key local government areas including Gwale, Nasarawa, Kumbotso, Fagge, Kano Municipal, Tarauni, Dala, and Ungogo.
The Commissioner explained that some of the major contracts include the Tudun-Yola-Gwarzo Road and Dansudau Bypass awarded at N1.896 billion, and the Jafar-Madobi Road and underpass valued at N1.323 billion. He added that the rehabilitation of Sabo Bakin Zuwo Road was awarded at N2.014 billion, while Muhammad Buhari Road rehabilitation was given at N4.108 billion.
Other projects under the township road contracts are the Rijiyar Lemo Road which will cost N494.367 million, and erosion control works on the Kwanar Durba–Fammar-Kunau Kure Road valued at N205.983 million. The rehabilitation of Airport Road in Kano metropolis was also included, with the contract awarded at N5.956 billion.
Waiya noted that the projects are targeted at improving connectivity among communities within Kano metropolis, easing the flow of traffic, and enhancing road safety. He said the government understands the importance of good roads in driving economic activities, adding that the investments are part of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s commitment to deliver better infrastructure to the people of Kano State.
In addition to the township roads, the state government also approved two other major projects outside Kano metropolis. These include the construction of Rogo-Bari-Falgore-Mahangi roads in Rogo Local Government Area, awarded at N13.3 billion, and the Panda-Hamdullahi-Albasu-Salkwayan-Dutse roads in Albasu Local Government Area, awarded at N6.9 billion.
“These projects were carefully selected because of their social and economic importance to the communities they connect,” Waiya explained. “We are confident that when completed, they will not only improve the living conditions of our people but also strengthen commerce, farming, and industrial activities.”
The Commissioner said the government remains focused on infrastructure development as a way of improving the lives of citizens. He added that the contracts are designed to provide quality and durable road networks that will stand the test of time.
For residents, the road projects are expected to bring relief by reducing travel time, easing movement from one part of the city to another, and creating smoother access to markets, schools, hospitals, and business centres. Farmers will also benefit from improved transportation of goods from rural farming areas to urban markets.
Waiya assured that the state government will closely monitor the contractors handling the projects to ensure timely completion and compliance with quality standards. He said the administration will not tolerate delays or substandard work, as every naira being spent must deliver value to the people.
The NUJ President, Alhassan Yahaya, who joined the tour of the projects, commended the Kano State Government for investing heavily in infrastructure. He said journalists across the state would continue to track the progress of the projects and ensure that the people are well informed about government investments in their communities.
The contracts, worth over N40.8 billion, are among the largest infrastructure commitments by the Kano State Government in recent years. Upon completion, the roads are expected to improve transportation within the metropolis, reduce the stress of daily commuting, and boost the state’s economy through enhanced commercial and social activities.
