The Ogun State Commissioner for Housing, Jagumolu Akande Omoniyi, has commended LG Electronics for investing in projects that provide access to clean and safe water in Nigerian communities.
Omoniyi, who was represented by the Senior Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Housing, Kolawole Agemo, gave the commendation on Wednesday during the official commissioning of a solar-powered borehole donated by LG Electronics to residents of Ikija, a community in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
The Commissioner said the gesture was a good example of how corporate social responsibility could make a meaningful impact on the lives of ordinary citizens. He noted that the initiative was in line with the administration’s agenda to work with the private sector to improve living standards in the state.
According to him, the intervention came at a time when many communities still struggle to access potable water. He explained that families in Ikija had faced serious challenges in sourcing safe drinking water, with mothers, children, and the elderly often forced to walk long distances to fetch water.
Omoniyi said, “On behalf of the people of Ikija, I want to extend our heartfelt appreciation to LG Electronics for this generous donation. At a time when access to clean water remains a pressing challenge for many households, LG has not only recognised our need but has taken concrete steps to meet it. Clean water is life, and this solar-powered borehole will greatly improve the daily living conditions of hundreds of families in this community. The use of solar energy also makes it sustainable and environmentally friendly, setting the right example for development projects across the state.”
He urged the Ikija community to take ownership of the project and ensure it is properly maintained so that it can serve residents for years to come. He also appealed to other multinational companies, corporate bodies, and wealthy Nigerians to emulate LG Electronics by partnering with government to improve communities across the country.
In his remarks, the General Manager of Media Solution, TV Division at LG Electronics West Africa, Mr. Choongbae Seok, said the donation of the solar-powered borehole was in line with the company’s mission to “make life good” for Nigerians. He said the project was designed to provide sustainable and reliable access to potable water for residents, noting that the borehole runs independently of the national electricity grid since it is powered by renewable energy.
Seok explained that the project goes beyond water provision. He revealed that LG Electronics had also donated a solar-powered mobile laundry cabin to the Ikija community. The facility, equipped with washing machines and dryers, will allow residents to wash and dry their clothes at no cost. According to him, the laundry centre will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, Monday to Saturday, for two months, giving residents access to modern laundry services powered by clean energy.
He added, “By combining renewable energy with community service, we are setting a new benchmark for social impact projects in Ogun State. This project empowers the people not only with essential resources like water but also with dignity, convenience, and social inclusion. It is part of a larger plan by LG Electronics to build 50 solar-powered boreholes across Nigeria. So far, 11 projects have been completed.”
Speaking further, the Head of Marketing at LG Electronics, Mr. Paul Mba, described the project as part of the company’s long-term commitment to the welfare of Nigerians. He said the company would continue to invest in projects that add value to communities and improve the well-being of citizens.
Mba said, “We want to look after the well-being of Nigerians because that is at the centre of our mission as a company. We remain committed to community development and initiatives that make life rewarding for the people.”
The Chairman of Ikija Community Development Association, Mr. Taofeek Oladipupo, expressed gratitude to LG Electronics for the donation, describing it as a life-changing project. He assured the company and the state government that the community would safeguard and maintain the facility so it would serve its purpose for the long term.
The project highlights the growing role of private sector investment in addressing infrastructure gaps in Nigeria. While government continues to struggle with limited resources to meet public needs, initiatives such as LG’s clean water projects show how partnerships can support sustainable development.
