Rubis Energy Uganda has announced the appointment of William Fillet as its new Managing Director, signaling a fresh chapter of growth and innovation in Uganda’s energy market. Fillet, who has more than 20 years of experience in the energy sector, takes over from Olivier Gatera, who is moving to a new assignment within Rubis Energy East Africa.
The French-owned multinational said Fillet’s leadership will focus on expanding Rubis Energy Uganda’s footprint, strengthening sustainable business practices, and delivering more value to customers across the country. Speaking shortly after his appointment was confirmed in Kampala, Fillet described his new role as an opportunity to build on the strong foundation laid by his predecessor.
“I am here to build on this legacy of growth and operational excellence, ensuring that the company’s vision continues to flourish,” Fillet said. He added that his mission is to deepen innovation and sustainability in both the company’s operations and the wider Ugandan communities it serves. “Rubis Energy’s mission is to provide reliable energy solutions for everyone while driving progress and development. We will achieve this by advancing clean energy solutions, expanding innovative products like RUBiS ULTRA TEC Advanced Fuel Technology, Rubis Gas, and Castrol lubricants, while strengthening community engagement and investing in our people.”
Outgoing Managing Director Olivier Gatera also reflected on his time in Uganda, praising both the resilience of the company’s staff and the hospitality of the Ugandan people. “The resilience and warmth of the Ugandan people have truly humbled me. Together, we expanded our network to over 70 service stations, including 26 Enjoy convenience stores, and launched innovative products like the Rubis Card. We also digitized customer experiences through platforms such as the Rubis App,” Gatera said.
Olivier Sabrié, Rubis Energies Chief Executive Officer for East Africa and Group Managing Director of Rubis Energy Kenya, also paid tribute to Gatera while expressing confidence in Fillet’s appointment. “Olivier Gatera leaves behind a strong legacy, and we are grateful for his dedication and service. We are equally excited to welcome William Fillet, whose experience and strategic vision make him well-suited to lead Rubis Energy Uganda into its next phase of innovation and sustainable growth,” Sabrié said.
Rubis Energy entered the Ugandan market in 2019 through the acquisition of Kobil and Delta Petroleum. That bold move gave the company a large network of service stations and a strong base of loyal customers. Since then, Rubis has invested heavily in modernizing its stations, rebranding its outlets, and diversifying its product offerings. Today, it is recognized as a strong player in Uganda’s energy sector, providing fuel, lubricants, and gas solutions for homes, businesses, and industries.
Industry observers say Fillet’s appointment is timely, especially as Uganda’s energy market continues to expand with new demands for modern, efficient, and clean energy solutions. With economic growth increasing fuel consumption, and households and businesses relying more on gas and alternative energy, Rubis Energy Uganda is positioning itself as a leader in the sector. The company’s push for sustainability also aligns with the global shift towards cleaner fuels and reduced carbon emissions.
Under Fillet’s leadership, Rubis Energy Uganda has reaffirmed its commitment to offering high-quality energy products and services while keeping customer satisfaction, safety, and sustainability at the heart of its operations. Market analysts believe his experience will help Rubis strengthen its competitiveness in Uganda, where players like TotalEnergies and Vivo Energy also control a significant share of the market.
Rubis has already introduced several innovative products in Uganda, such as the ULTRA TEC advanced fuel technology that promises better engine performance, Rubis Gas cylinders for homes and industries, and Castrol lubricants for vehicles and machines. Its Enjoy convenience stores have also become popular for providing quick shopping options at fuel stations, while the Rubis App and Rubis Card have enhanced digital payments and customer loyalty in a market that is rapidly embracing cashless transactions.
Fillet’s appointment also comes at a time when energy companies are under pressure to adopt more sustainable practices. With Uganda exploring opportunities in oil production, renewable energy, and regional fuel trade, his focus on innovation and sustainability could help Rubis Energy Uganda not only maintain its market share but also expand further across East Africa.
For many customers and investors, the change in leadership at Rubis Energy Uganda is seen as a positive step towards strengthening the company’s long-term presence in the country. The strong growth recorded under Gatera, combined with Fillet’s international experience, sets the stage for the company to drive more innovation, expand its network, and contribute to Uganda’s energy development.
