Severance breakout Zach Cherry, True Detective co-star Kali Reis and Johnno Wilson (I Love That for You) have joined the cast of Resident Evil, Sony Pictures and Zach Cregger’s reboot of the venerable horror franchise.
Austin Abrams, who stole scenes as an unhoused drug addict in Cregger’s hit Weapons this past summer, is leading the feature, which is veering away from the previous adaptations and is meant to be a love letter to the original Capcom video games while using brand new characters.
Cregger is directing and wrote the script with Shay Hatten (John Wick: Chapter 3 and Chapter 4).
Plot details for this one are being kept under the umbrella but here are some key words: hapless courier, mysterious package, mutated creatures, corporate conspiracy.
Cherry is said to be playing a scientist at a hospital, while Reis is an ex-military character that was originally written for a male actor. Wilson’s role is not known.
The feature begins shooting mid-October in Prague. Sony Pictures is releasing the project theatrically on Set. 18, 2026
Constantin Film is producing and co-financing the film.
Constantin’s Robert Kulzer, Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Miri Yoon, who produced Cregger’s Weapons, along with Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan of PlayStation Productions (The Last of Us, Uncharted) are producing.
Constantin’s Oliver Berben and Davis Films’ Victor Hadida are executive producing. TriStar Pictures’ president Nicole Brown is overseeing the film for Sony Pictures.
Cherry received an Emmy nomination for his performance as employee Dylan George in Apple TV’s acclaimed hit series Severance. He has appeared in Amazon’s Fallout as well as movies such as Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. He is already in business with TriStar thanks to appearing in the upcoming Nate Bargatze comedy, The Breadwinner.
Professional boxing champion-turned-actress Reiss caught Hollywood’s attention when she starred opposite Jodie Foster in season four of HBO’s True Detective, earning Emmy, Critics Choice and Golden Globe nominations in the process. Up next, she will star alongside Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson in Amazon/MGM’s Mercy, Apple TV+’s 12 12 12, opposite Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan, and Castle Rock Entertainment’s Wind River: Rising, the sequel to Taylor Sheridan’s 2017 drama.
Wilson hails from a comedy background and is an alumnus of the Groundling Theatre. He appeared in season two of Peacock’s Twisted Metal, and as series regular in the Showtime original series I Love This For You, directed by Michael Showalter, and as Larry David’s Mormon friend in an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Cherry is repped by CAA, Edna Cowan Management, and Felker Toczek while Reis is repped by CAA, Authentic Talent, and Jackoway Austen.
