President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana and his wife, First Lady Mrs Lordina Mahama, have arrived in Beijing, China, for a state visit at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Mahama’s visit, which begins ahead of the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women scheduled for October 13 to 14, 2025, will focus on promoting gender equality and deepening economic cooperation between Ghana and China.
The Ghanaian leader, who currently serves as the African Union Champion for Gender and Development Issues, is expected to join other world leaders for the UN Women–China co-hosted summit. The event will reaffirm global commitments made during the Fourth World Conference on Women held 30 years ago in Beijing.
This year also marks two major anniversaries — 80 years of the founding of the United Nations and 30 years since the landmark women’s conference that advanced the global agenda for women’s rights and empowerment.
While in China, President Mahama and his delegation will explore new investment opportunities and strengthen diplomatic and economic ties with Beijing.
During his visit, Mahama will hold bilateral talks with President Xi Jinping and China’s Premier, Mr Li Qiang. Both sides are expected to discuss trade, infrastructure development, and technology transfer, focusing on how China can further support Ghana’s industrialisation and value-added export drive.
The Ghanaian President is also scheduled to host a Presidential Investment Forum in Beijing, where Ghanaian business leaders, Chinese investors, and representatives of major Chinese corporations will meet to discuss investment opportunities in agriculture, manufacturing, energy, and digital infrastructure.
The forum is expected to strengthen cooperation between Ghana’s private sector and Chinese companies with interests in West Africa.
According to the Ghanaian presidency, Mahama will also visit Fujian Province, where he will meet with Chinese enterprises already operating in Ghana, including those in construction, mining, and renewable energy sectors.
His delegation includes key government officials and business leaders — Mrs Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry; officials from the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC); the Free Zones Authority; and the Ghana Export Promotion Authority.
Other members of the entourage are Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister of Foreign Affairs; Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection; Mr Kwame Governs Agbodza, Minister of Roads and Highways; and Mr Thomas Ampem Nyarko, Deputy Minister for Finance.
Also accompanying the President are Dr Callistus Mahama, Executive Secretary to the President; Mrs Joyce Bawa Mogtari, Presidential Advisor and Special Aide; Madam Shamima Muslim, Deputy Presidential Spokesperson; and Nana Yaa Gyantuah, Presidential Staffer.
The visit is expected to reaffirm Ghana’s long-standing diplomatic relations with China, which have grown significantly over the past two decades through cooperation in infrastructure, energy, and trade.
Observers believe that this trip could open new avenues for Chinese investment in Ghana’s industrial sector, while strengthening collaboration on women’s empowerment — a cause Mahama has consistently championed at the continental level.
Both nations are expected to issue a joint communiqué at the end of the visit outlining new commitments on trade, gender development, and sustainable economic cooperation.
